this is my little brother rocky. rocky has down’s syndrome. he’s probably my best friend because he has SO many amazing qualities. rocky loves everything and everyone, no matter who they are. if you’re nice to him, he’s nice to you. he always has a smile on his face, and is always there to make you laugh if you’re sad. the other day i was crying in my room and he walked in with a popsicle and hugged me and gave it to me and sat there trying to make me smile for a good ten minutes. he’s so amazing.
here’s the thing though; rocky is mentally challenged, or as many people call it, ‘retarded’. that’s not a bad thing, being retarded. it just means being slow or less advanced in mental, physical, or social development than is usual for ones age.
retarded does notmean stupid.the number of times i have heard someone use that word in a bad way is countless. YOU ARE NOT “RETARDED” FOR GETTING A BAD GRADE ON A MATH TEST. get that through your fucking mind. don’t call someone “retarded” for missing a basket in basketball, or a goal in soccer. if someone trips in the hallways, THEY ARE NOT RETARDED. this is what i hear in my school, at the store, everywhere.
having a mental disability is a gift for so many people. rocky doesn’t see the bad in the world at all. he’s always laughing, smiling, and loving every thing he sees, does, and is. please tell me how that is bad. please tell me how being “retarded” is a bad thing. if anything, it’s a blessing.
please stop using retarded in a negative way. it’s not a negative thing, you see? it’s absolutely amazing in so many ways because even though people with mental disabilities are slower than others, they have so many other amazing qualities that people overlook.
thank you for reading this, and have a nice day. also, rocky says hello!
